St Pete Shakes Releases Spooky Shakespeare Fun Just in Time for Halloween!
St Petersburg Shakespeare Festival presents “Something Spooky This Way Comes: A ghoulish collection of Shakespeare’s ghosts, witches, and murderers to fright and delight.”
“Something Spooky This Way Comes” is a 35-minute video presentation of some of Shakespeare’s spookiest speeches and ghoulishly delightful scenes. It includes speeches and scenes from Hamlet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Richard III, Julius Caesar, and The Winter’s Tale. It is only available through the St Pete Shakes website.
The premise of the production is that these are ghosts continuing to perform their famous roles in an old, haunted theater.
GJ Thompson is the producing artistic director of St Petersburg Shakespeare Festival and is constantly on the look out for new ways to bring Shakespeare performances to audiences and into schools. Thompson says, “I’ve always wanted to use characters and ghostly references from Shakespeare’s plays as Halloween decorations like silhouettes of the Witches from MacBeth, Richard III, and ghosts from various Shakespeare plays. I think the story that we have built around why these scenes are happening creates a fun haunted experience for audiences.” Supernatural elements are of central significance in many of Shakespeare's plays, contributing to their dramatic power and intrigue. This video was devised and directed by Dr. Thompson, and he wrote the additional material that introduces scenes. It is performed by local actors many of whom appear regularly in St. Petersburg Shakespeare Festival productions.
The video is available on the St Petersburg Shakespeare Festival website FREE of charge for a limited time, October 20 thru November 1.
